Q. What is a CASA volunteer?
A. CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate. A CASA volunteer is a member of the community that is trained to advocate on behalf of children involved in juvenile court child abuse and neglect proceedings.
Q. What qualifications do I need to become a volunteer?
A. All volunteers must complete 40 hours of training, submit to a criminal background check, be at least 21 years old, and most importantly have a desire to work for the best interest of children. Prior experience is not required. We welcome diversity and have volunteers from all walks of life.
Q. What is the expected time commitment?
A. All volunteers must complete the required initial CASA training. We ask each volunteer to commit to a year of service (a year is the average length of a case). You do CASA work as it fits your schedule (except for court hearings) so there is flexibility. On average, CASA volunteers spend 10-15 hours a month volunteering.
Q. What do CASA volunteers do?
A. Under staff supervision, CASA volunteers are assigned to children involved in juvenile court due to child abuse and neglect in the home. The CASA gathers information from caseworkers, teachers, foster parents, and anyone involved in the child’s life. With the help of the staff, CASA volunteers submit a written report to the judge stating what we feel is in the best interest of the child/children. Volunteers are also responsible for attending any court hearings regarding the case they have been assigned to. Once the recommendations have been made, CASA monitors the case until a permanent plan is in place for the child/children.
Q. Why should I become a CASA volunteer?
A. All children deserve a safe and permanent home. As a volunteer, you can make sure that the abused and neglected children of Rockdale County are not lost in the system. CASA volunteering is a great way to give back to the community. It also gives you an opportunity to meet and work with others committed to our children.
